WordPress maintenance: why it matters and what it covers

Many people think a website is finished when it goes live. With WordPress that is misleading: publication is only the beginning. WordPress, its theme and all its plugins are software that ages, needs updates and can become a security risk when left un-updated. Maintenance is not an extra service offered “just in case” — it is part of the site's reliability. Let us look at why, and what that means in practice.

Why WordPress needs maintenance at all

WordPress consists of a core and many parts that evolve separately: the theme and dozens of plugins, each with its own developer and its own update cycle. That flexibility is WordPress's strength — and also its weakness.

  • Vulnerabilities are discovered constantly. Every update often contains security fixes. An un-updated plugin is the most common way a WordPress site gets hacked.
  • Parts conflict with each other. When the core updates but an old plugin is not compatible with it, a feature or the whole site can break.
  • Performance degrades over time. Accumulated plugins, unoptimised images and database “junk” make the site slow.

We have written about these risks in more depth in the post the risks of using an un-updated WordPress and its modules.

What proper WordPress maintenance covers

Maintenance is not simply “pressing the update button”. Proper maintenance means systematic work that keeps the site secure, fast and dependable.

Updates done safely

Updating the core, the theme and the plugins — preferably so that changes are tested before they reach the public site. That way a possible fault never reaches your customers.

Backups

Regular automatic backups kept separately from the site. If something goes wrong, the site can be restored quickly without data loss.

Security monitoring

Continuous watching — suspicious login activity, malware, ending up on a blacklist. Plus the basic protective measures: strong passwords, limited login attempts and two-factor authentication.

Keeping the speed

Monitoring and optimising the site's loading speed — caching, image compression, tidying the database. A fast site is better both for the visitor and for search engines.

Fast resolution of faults

When something breaks, there is someone who fixes it — often before you notice the problem yourself.

Smaller content and design changes

Making changes to texts, images and small fixes without having to start a separate project every time.

What happens when maintenance is not done

An unmaintained WordPress is like an unmaintained car — it works for a while, until one moment it does not, and usually at the worst possible time. Typical consequences: the site is hacked through an un-updated plugin, visitors see an error message at the moment of purchase, Google flags the site as unsafe, or it becomes so slow that people leave. Every such incident costs more than the preventive cost of maintenance.

Do it yourself or order it?

If you have the time and the technical confidence, you can maintain WordPress yourself — the main thing is to actually do it regularly, not only when something is broken. In practice, though, maintenance often goes undone because it is nobody's direct job. That is why many companies prefer to order it: there is a clear person responsible and the site stays in order without you having to think about it.

How we help

We offer website and online store maintenance that covers everything above — updates, backups, security monitoring, speed and fast support. We maintain both WordPress sites and code-based solutions, including sites we did not build ourselves (we review those first). And if a site needs more constant plugin management than you like, we will also be honest about whether a code-based alternative would pay off.

If you would like someone to keep a constant eye on your WordPress site, get in touch — we will review the site and set up a suitable maintenance arrangement.
