Book design and layout

A good book is not only good words — it is also how those words sit on the page. Considered layout makes reading comfortable, guides the eye and gives the content a dignified frame. Bad layout, by contrast, gets in the way no matter how good the text is.

We have years of experience designing books, collections and printed matter — including the layout of substantial works of history and remembrance. We produce files that are ready for the printer and that you can be proud of.

Readable and beautiful

The right typography and layout make reading a pleasure and give the content dignity.

Print-ready files

We hand over correct files that are ready for the printing house — with no last-minute surprises.

Experience with large works

We have laid out fiction as well as substantial works of history full of lists and data.

Layout that respects the content

The purpose of layout is to make reading effortless — so effortless that the reader does not notice the layout at all and focuses on the content. To achieve that we choose the right typeface, line spacing, margins and rhythm that keep the eye fresh page after page.

With substantial works, consistency and clear structure matter especially — headings, the table of contents, indexes and references have to form a logical whole. This is exactly where our experience with large, complex manuscripts pays off.

From idea to the printing house

We help throughout the journey: from choosing the design to the print-ready files. If needed we also advise on format, paper and printing technique so the end result matches expectations.

Whether it is a memoir, a company publication or a work of fiction — we give your book a polished, professional look.

The difference between book design and book layout

The two terms are often used interchangeably, although they mean different work. Layout is placing the content on the pages: choosing the typeface and size, line spacing, margins, the hierarchy of headings, the placement of images and tables, the table of contents, indexes and signature counts. It is the work that decides whether the book is pleasant to read.

Book design is broader — it also covers the cover, the title page, the colour scheme and the overall impression the book leaves. Most clients want both, and we do them as one job, because the cover and the interior have to speak to each other. If you already have the layout and only need a cover (or the other way round), we do that too.

How much book layout costs

Layout starts at €690 and, together with cover design, at €990. The biggest factors are the page count and the complexity of the content: ordinary prose can be laid out quickly, but a work with tables, lists, footnotes, photographs and indexes takes many times more work. For substantial, data-heavy works we quote after seeing the manuscript.

We always give a fixed price before the work starts — not an hourly rate whose final sum nobody knows in advance. Send us your manuscript or an extract and within a couple of business days we will tell you what the work costs and how long it takes.

Frequently asked questions

Do you design the cover as well?

Yes, we design both the interior and the cover so the book forms a coherent whole.

What format do I receive the files in?

We hand over print-ready PDF files that meet the printing house's requirements. If needed we also prepare a version suitable for an e-book.

Can you lay out a large and complex work?

Yes. We have experience laying out substantial, data-heavy works of history where structure and accuracy matter especially.

How much does book layout cost?

Layout starts at €690, and at €990 together with cover design. The price depends on the page count and the complexity of the content — tables, lists, references and indexes take considerably more work than ordinary prose. We give a fixed price before the work starts.

How long does book layout take?

A book of typical length is ready in 2–4 weeks; a large or data-heavy work takes longer. The biggest factor is how finished the manuscript is — unedited text inevitably means several rounds of corrections.

Do you also find a printing house or handle printing?

We do not print ourselves, but we have long-standing partners among Estonian printing houses and are glad to help with the choice and the communication. We also advise on format, paper and print run so the invoice does not come as a surprise.

Do you lay out smaller publications as well?

Yes — collections, yearbooks, catalogues, magazines and brochures all fall under the same work. The same principle applies to a small publication: clear structure and correct print-ready files.
