Produced by us, the book “Register of Those Deported from Estonia 1940–1941” (R8/4) contains a short-form list of Estonians deported to Russia in 1940–1941. The book holds 12,354 short personal records and runs to 130 pages.
What the book contains
This is a register of short records: each entry gathers one deportee's core data into a compact form that makes it possible to fit more than twelve thousand people onto a hundred and thirty pages. That is exactly what makes such a work a task of its own for the typesetter — with registers, readability is decided by every millimetre of column width, type size and line spacing.
If you are looking for a specific person's details, it is worth knowing that registers like this have been published in several volumes, each covering its own period. We have also laid out the register of those deported in 1945–1953 and the volume of brief records for the memorial to the victims of communism. The publisher can answer questions about buying the books and their availability most accurately.
Our part of the work
Our lead contractor Raul Juurma was responsible for the entire book layout, tidying the register, statistical analysis of the processed data, photo editing and communication with the printing house.
Laying out a data-heavy work differs noticeably from an ordinary book: before anything can go on the page, the data has to be harmonised, checked and tidied.
